The chair will meet at a minimum annually with each faculty member to provide evaluation, guidance, and mentoring for the faculty member. The chair is responsible for managing faculty time away to ensure there is no conflict of commitment, and for ensuring that faculty disclose consulting agreements, outside income and potential conflicts of interest so that these can be evaluated and managed appropriately.

The chair will oversee all faculty activities and manage all academic initiatives. The chair will provide strategic program recommendations on future directions for faculty complement to the Dean. The chair has the authority to assign administrative, teaching, research, and (where appropriate) clinical roles to the faculty of the department. The chair is responsible and accountable for the academic performance and productivity of the faculty.

3)     Educational and training programs. The chair is responsible, together with their faculty, for the development of the medical student and graduate student teaching programs of the department. The chair is responsible for maintaining liaison with other clinical and/or basic science departments to foster an integrated teaching program for the School of Medicine, and to work with the Vice Dean for Education. In particular, the chair is responsible for promoting and implementing the strategic directions established by the Curriculum Educational Policy (CEP) Committee.

The chair will encourage and support research creativity and productivity at all levels of the department, including faculty, fellows, and students. The chair will provide input on research strengths and recommendations on strategic research program directions for the Dean, as well as the Vice Dean for Basic Science Research. The chair is responsible for fostering interdepartmental collaboration and integration of basic, translational, and clinical research.

5)     Facilities. The department chair is responsible for the planning and development of departmental space and for ensuring that all space is used efficiently and productively. The chair should direct all requests for new academic space (research, faculty office, teaching) to the Space Resource Allocation Advisory Committee (SRAAC) who make space recommendations to the Dean.

6)     Finances and budget. The department chair is responsible for the financial affairs and long-term fiscal stability of the department including budget preparation and reporting. Expenditures from an approved fiscal year budget are authorized only by the chair with the approval of the Dean or Dean’s delegate. About the Institution:

Kansas Health Science Center opened one of the nation’s newest medical schools, Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine, known as KansasCOM, in 2022. As the first college of osteopathic medicine in Kansas, this forward-thinking medical school has the goal of becoming a world-class training hub for osteopathic physicians with the mission to train these osteopathic physicians of the future to provide effective, empathic, and innovative care while optimizing the health of patients and their communities. This includes the goal of expanding health education and healthcare by increasing the number of physicians trained in Kansas, with particular focus on serving the widely distributed communities of rural Kansas, and beyond. KansasCOM’s inaugural class of students (Class of 2026) matriculated in August, 2022. The College has implemented a systems-based curriculum that integrates disciplines and incorporates interactive methodologies and an andragogical teaching philosophy. The College aspires to promote student learning in a way that values people’s differences and provides an inclusive environment, such that students are enthusiastic about providing patient-centered, evidence-based care of the highest quality. KansasCOM leads in a manner that reflects its ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, community, humility and integrity, innovation, teamwork, and excellence.

KansasCOM is centrally located in the heart of Kansas’ largest city, Wichita, a thriving, diverse center of culture and industry. A college of osteopathic medicine is essential to meet the growing medical needs of rural locations across the United States. The 116,000 square-foot college of osteopathic medicine and research center provides a modern space equipped with the latest technology to deliver high-quality medical education that encompasses an osteopathic skills training center, simulation facility, patient teaching rooms, and expansive lecture halls. Technologically advanced classrooms and labs feature VR, touchscreens, and data analysis tools, enhancing its immersive curriculum along with lounge areas that foster well-being and social interaction.

DO Program

Different from most medical schools, the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program immerses each student in early clinical experiences starting in their first academic year. Through clinical practice, standardized patient encounters, and human-patient simulation, students gain firsthand experience identifying and addressing patient needs. This program provides opportunities to make a difference in patients’ lives far before clinical rotations. This program’s teachings will also provide students with a foundation to work within any sector of health care they desire, apart from direct patient care positions.

Department of Integrated Biomedical Sciences

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Integrated Biomedical Sciences, these faculty positions will become part of a dynamic and integral part of the College, focusing on providing a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of biomedical sciences. This KansasCOM department is pivotal in laying the foundational knowledge necessary for future healthcare professionals, particularly those pursuing osteopathic medicine.

Accreditation

Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KansasCOM) has been granted pre-accreditation status from the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). COCA is the accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) for predoctoral education of osteopathic physicians in the United States.

Pre-accreditation, as distinct from full accreditation, permits the KansasCOM to solicit applications and admit students, offer medical instruction within the approved osteopathic medical curriculum, and announce its Pre-Accreditation Status. KansasCOM can be considered for full accreditation status following the graduation of its first class, which it anticipates will occur in May 2026. The attainment of full accreditation status is subject to review and approval by COCA.
